# AEO vs SEO

What each one does, and which a local business needs first

AEO vs SEO is not a choice between rivals. SEO earns your pages a place in Google's ranked results; AEO makes those pages the source AI assistants and Google's AI Overviews quote. Choose SEO first if your site does not yet rank for its own services. Add AEO once it does, or as soon as your customers ask assistants before they search.

## What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO, search engine optimization, works to rank a page in the list of results and win the click. AEO, answer engine optimization, works to have a business named, or a page cited, inside an answer written by an AI system, often with no click at all. They share most of their methods and differ in the result they aim for.

| Compared on | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| The goal | A high position in the ranked results | Being named or quoted inside an AI answer |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results, the map, the local pack | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode |
| What it rewards | A page that matches intent, technical health, links, local signals | Short, complete answers, consistent business facts, structured data, mentions on other sites |
| The unit of success | A ranking and a click | A mention or a citation, often without a click |
| How it is measured | Search Console clicks, impressions and positions, then leads | A fixed set of questions asked each month, then branded searches and direct visits |
| What it depends on | Its own work | Largely on SEO: Google links AI answers to pages that are indexed and eligible in Search |

The last row is the one that settles the order. Google says that to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, and that the best practices for SEO remain relevant. That is in its guide to [AI features and your website](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features).

## Which should a local business do first?

SEO, in nearly every case. If Google cannot find, index and rank your service pages, an AI answer built from Google's results has little reason to cite them. Once those pages rank for your own services and towns, AEO is the next layer: rewriting them so each question gets a short, quotable answer, and making your facts match everywhere.

There is one exception. If your customers already ask AI assistants for recommendations, as some buyers of agencies, managers and contractors now do, start AEO work on your most important pages at the same time, because those answers are being written today.

## What are the pros and cons of SEO?

- **Pro: it compounds.** Pages that rank keep bringing visits after the work is done, without paying for each click.
- **Pro: it is measurable.** Search Console shows clicks, impressions and positions for every page and search.
- **Pro: it feeds AEO.** The same indexed, ranking pages are the ones AI answers link to.
- **Con: it is slow.** Competitive searches take months, and a new site takes longer.
- **Con: results sit lower when AI answers sit higher.** Where Google shows an AI Overview, the first organic result sits further down the page.

## What are the pros and cons of AEO?

- **Pro: it reaches buyers earlier.** People who ask an assistant for a shortlist meet the names in the answer first.
- **Pro: it improves the page for people too.** Clear answers near the top help every reader, not only machines.
- **Con: it is harder to measure.** There is no Search Console for assistants, so tracking means asking the same questions every month and recording the answers.
- **Con: answers change.** The same question can produce different names on different days and in different tools.
- **Con: it cannot stand alone.** Without pages that are indexed and trusted, there is little for an answer engine to cite.

## When should you use both?

For many local businesses, as soon as the basics are in place. The order below keeps each step building on the last.

1. **Fix the foundation.** Make sure every service and location page is indexed, fast and clearly about one thing.
2. **Rank for your own services.** Work the searches you nearly rank for, the [striking distance keywords](https://kihanmarketing.com/glossary/striking-distance-keywords/), before chasing new ones.
3. **Rewrite for answers.** Put the questions customers ask in headings, with 40 to 60 word answers straight underneath.
4. **Make your facts agree.** Match your name, address, phone number and services across your site, your [Google Business Profile](https://kihanmarketing.com/glossary/google-business-profile/) and directories.
5. **Track both.** Search Console for SEO, and a monthly set of prompts in the main assistants for AEO.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AEO depends on SEO. Google links its AI answers to pages that are indexed and eligible to show in Search, and it says SEO best practices still apply to its AI features. What changes is the target: a page now has to rank and also be easy to quote.

### Does AEO need different content from SEO?

Mostly the same content, written differently. A page that ranks can still be hard to quote if its answer is buried in the third paragraph. AEO moves the answer up: the question as a heading, a complete answer of 40 to 60 words right below it, and the detail after that.

### How do you measure AEO?

Pick 10 to 20 questions your customers ask, ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google every month, and record whether your business is named and which pages are cited. Watch branded searches and direct visits in Search Console and analytics too, since people who hear your name in an answer may search for it next.

### Do schema markup or llms.txt make a page appear in AI answers?

Not by themselves. Google says no special file or markup is needed to appear in its AI features. [Schema markup](https://kihanmarketing.com/glossary/schema-markup/) still helps search engines read a page's facts correctly, and [llms.txt](https://kihanmarketing.com/glossary/llms-txt/) is a proposal some tools may read. The page's content is what gets quoted.
