# AI Overviews

Google's AI answers, and how a page earns a link in one

AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries Google shows at the top of some search results, with links to the pages they draw on. Google began rolling them out to everyone in the United States on May 14, 2024. Google says they can show a wider set of links than the classic results, because they run several related searches behind the scenes.

## How does Google choose the pages in an AI Overview?

Google describes a technique it calls query fan-out: it issues several related searches across subtopics and sources, then writes one answer and links the pages it used. Google also says there are no extra requirements to appear and no special file or markup is needed. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Search, and good at answering the question.

That is from Google's own guide, [AI features and your website](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features). The launch date and the U.S. rollout are from Google's [announcement of May 14, 2024](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/generative-ai-google-search-may-2024/).

## Why do AI Overviews matter for a med spa?

Many of the questions people ask before booking a treatment are the kind Google answers with an overview: how long recovery takes, how many sessions are needed, what a treatment is for. The clinics whose pages answer those questions clearly are the ones the overview can link to.

For example, someone searches how long the redness lasts after microneedling. An overview answers in a few lines and links two or three pages. A clinic's treatment page that answers that question in its own short section, written by the clinic, is a candidate for one of those links. A page that only lists the treatment name and a booking button is not.

## How can a page earn a link in an AI Overview?

1. **Answer the question near the top.** Put the question in a heading and a complete answer of 40 to 60 words right under it.
2. **Cover the follow-up questions.** Fan-out searches look for subtopics, so answer the next three questions a reader would ask on the same page.
3. **Keep it indexable.** Make sure Search Console shows the page as indexed, with no noindex tag and nothing blocking Googlebot.
4. **Show who wrote it.** Name the author or the clinic and date the page, so a reader and a search engine can judge how current it is.
