# Answer Engine Optimization

AEO, defined, and why it matters for a local business

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making a business's pages easy for AI assistants and answer features to find, trust and quote. It covers plain question-and-answer copy, business facts that match across the web, structured data and a complete Google Business Profile, so tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews name the business in their answers.

## Why does AEO matter for a local business?

Many questions customers type into Google, or ask an AI assistant, now get an answer in one block of text, with a few businesses named and a few pages cited. If your pages answer those questions clearly and your details agree everywhere, you can be one of the names. If not, a competitor is.

Say a homeowner asks an assistant who repairs hail damage on roofs nearby. The answer names a few roofers and cites the pages it read. A roofer with a page that answers that exact question in a short passage, and the same name, address and phone number on every directory, gives the assistant something it can quote and trust.

## How do you start with AEO?

1. **List the questions.** Write down the 10 to 20 questions customers ask before they call, in their own words.
2. **Answer each one first.** Put each question in a heading and answer it in 40 to 60 words straight under it, before any detail.
3. **Make your facts match.** Use the same business name, address, phone number and hours on your site, your Google Business Profile and every directory.
4. **Describe the page in code.** Add schema markup for the business, its services and its articles, so a machine reads the facts without guessing.
5. **Measure on a fixed set of prompts.** Ask the same questions in the main assistants each month and record who gets named and which pages get cited.
