# Exclusive vs Shared Leads

Leads that come to you alone, against leads sold to several

An exclusive lead is an inquiry that goes to one business only, such as a call from its own website, its Google Business Profile or its own ads. A shared lead is one a lead seller may pass to several businesses at once, so each one competes to call first. For a roofer, the difference changes how a lead is worked and what it is worth.

## What is the difference between exclusive and shared leads?

| Compared on | Exclusive leads | Shared leads |
|---|---|---|
| Who gets the lead | Your business only | Possibly several contractors |
| Where it comes from | Your website, profile, ads or referrals | A lead seller's site or service |
| What happens next | A conversation with someone who chose you | A race to call first |
| What you build | Your own name, reviews and pages | The seller's audience, not yours |
| How fast it starts | Slower to build | Fast, once you pay |

Shared leads are not always bad. They can fill a calendar quickly while a roofer's own channels grow. The problem is depending on them, because the business builds nothing it owns while it pays for them.

## Why do exclusive leads matter for a roofer?

Because a homeowner who called you, after finding your site, your reviews and your photos of local jobs, has already chosen to talk to you. A homeowner whose details went to several contractors at once may take the first call, the lowest quote or neither.

For example, a roofer buys leads from a seller and pays for each one, then finds the same homeowners have heard from other roofers within the hour. The same roofer builds town pages, a Google Business Profile with steady reviews and a search campaign for replacement work, and those calls come to it alone. The second set costs more effort to start and keeps paying back.
