# NAP Consistency

Name, address and phone number, the same everywhere

NAP consistency means a business's name, address and phone number read the same everywhere they appear online: its website, its Google Business Profile, directories such as Yelp, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, and the data providers that feed them. Matching details help search engines and AI assistants trust that every mention refers to the same business.

## Why does NAP consistency matter for a roofer?

Roofing companies often move offices, change numbers or add call tracking, and old listings do not update themselves. Each change can leave a trail of directories showing the old address or number. A search engine weighing whether your business is where it says it is has to reconcile those versions, and a customer who calls the old number reaches nobody.

For example, a roofing company moves from a home office to a shop across town and switches to a new phone line. The website and the Google profile get updated. Twenty directory listings, a supplier's dealer locator and an old chamber of commerce page still show the home address and the old number. Until those are corrected, the business exists at two addresses as far as the web is concerned.

## How do you check and fix NAP consistency?

1. **Pick the one true version.** Decide the exact name, address format and phone number, and write it down.
2. **Search for the old versions.** Search your old address and old phone number in quotation marks to find listings that still carry them.
3. **Fix the main listings first.** Correct your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, Facebook and the Better Business Bureau.
4. **Correct the rest.** Work through industry and local directories, and ask the owners of pages you cannot edit to update them.
5. **Check again every quarter.** Old data can return from data providers, so repeat the search.
