# Google Reviews Disappeared? Why Google Removes Real Reviews and What You Can Do

By [Atisam Elahi](https://kihanmarketing.com/atisam/), SEO Strategist

If your Google reviews disappeared, Google most likely took them down. Its spam and policy systems remove reviews they flag, and now and then they catch real ones. A profile change or a display bug can also hide reviews for a while. Reviews removed for breaking the rules don’t come back. The others often can.

This guide helps you work out which of those hit your [Google Business Profile](https://kihanmarketing.com/glossary/google-business-profile/). It covers what to check, who to contact, what to keep as proof and how to ask for reviews without tripping Google’s filters.

**Sound familiar?**

- A paving contractor’s listing was turned off with no notice. When it came back, all 23 of its five-star reviews were gone, and every support reply was the same canned answer.
- An HVAC company with 51 years in business and 750+ reviews saw its profile vanish overnight. The appeal tool could not even select a business that no longer existed.
- “I have lost about 150 reviews in the past few days. All legitimate taken from my actual clients.”
- A Tampa bankruptcy attorney lost about 80 reviews, and going through support did not bring them back.
- “Standard support channels have only provided a generic, robotic response and closed the ticket.”

**Key takeaway**

First, find out what kind of loss you have. One review gone is usually a filter. A dropping count with the reviews still listed is often a display bug. Everything gone at once points to a restriction, a spam spike or a profile change. Keep screenshots, contact support with names and dates, and never offer anything in return for a review.

## Google Reviews Disappeared? Start With What You See

The pattern of the loss tells you the most likely cause. Look at your profile on Google Maps and in Search, logged out, and compare it with the screenshots or notes you have. Then find your row below.

| What you see | Most likely cause | Can it come back? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| One or two reviews gone, the rest are fine | A spam or policy filter ( [Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/10313341?hl=en) ), or the customer deleted the review ( [Google](https://support.google.com/maps/answer/6230175?hl=en) ) | Not if it broke a rule. If it was real, contact support. |
| A batch of real reviews gone over a few days | Automated spam detection ( [Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/4596773?hl=en) ), which can be set off by unusual volumes of reviews ( [Google](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) ) | Sometimes. Google admits its system can remove legitimate reviews. |
| The count dropped, but the reviews are still listed | A display issue, like the one Google confirmed in February 2025 ( [Google](https://support.google.com/business/thread/324226897/gbp-review-count-known-issue-update?hl=en) ) | Usually, on its own, within days. |
| All reviews gone, with an email from Google or a warning on the profile | A restriction for fake engagement ( [Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/14114287?hl=en) ) | Restrictions last a set period. You can appeal. |
| Reviews gone right after a wave of fake reviews, and new reviews paused | Likely Google’s pause on new reviews after a spam spike ( [Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/maps/new-ways-were-protecting-businesses-on-maps/) ). Owners report real reviews hidden too ( [forum](https://support.google.com/business/thread/446543274/i-lost-over-1200-reviews-overnight-0-reviews-0-rating-please-help-case-id-6-9264000041426?hl=en) ). | Possibly. Contact support if real reviews stay missing. |
| Reviews gone after a suspension was lifted | Reinstatement ( [Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/10313341?hl=en) ) | Possibly. Google says to contact support. |
| Reviews gone or split after a merge, move or name change | A profile change ( [moves](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3098204?hl=en) , [merges](https://support.google.com/business/answer/12756178?hl=en) ) | Merges and same-name moves usually carry reviews over. |
| A new review never showed up | Still being checked, which can take a few days ( [Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/10313341?hl=en) ) | Yes, if it passes the checks. |

## Why Did My Google Reviews Disappear If They Were Real?

Most of the time, Google’s systems decided the reviews broke a rule, even though the customers were real. Google’s [help page on missing reviews](https://support.google.com/business/answer/10313341?hl=en) says: “Usually, reviews are removed for policy violations like spam or inappropriate content.”

Google uses software first. Its [content policy overview](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7422880?hl=en) says it uses both people and machine learning to find bad content. Its software scans reviews for “signals of suspicious user activity.” That suggests it judges patterns, not intent, so an honest business could match one by accident.

Google also admits its spam system sometimes removes real reviews. Its [page on reporting reviews](https://support.google.com/business/answer/4596773?hl=en) says to contact support when that happens.

Here are the rules that real businesses trip most often. Each one is from [Google’s prohibited and restricted content policy](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en), as of October 2026.

### What counts as fake engagement?

Fake engagement is any review that doesn’t reflect a real, unbiased experience. Google’s [rule](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) is short: “Fake engagement is not allowed and will be removed.” That covers paid reviews. It also covers one person posting from many accounts, or asking others to post for them.

### Can I give customers anything for a review?

No. Google bans every incentive for a review, good or bad. [The policy](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) names “payment, discounts, free goods and/or services” offered “in exchange for posting any review.”

This is stricter than US law. The Federal Trade Commission’s [guidance on its review rule](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/consumer-reviews-testimonials-rule-questions-answers) says its rule does not ban all rewards for reviews. It bans rewards that require a positive or negative review. Google’s policy goes further. So an offer the FTC rule allows can still get your reviews removed from Google.

### Can employees or family review my business?

No. Google removes reviews from people with a conflict of interest. [Its policy](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) names current or former staff, contractors and family. That would cover an owner reviewing their own business, too.

### Is it okay to ask only the customers you expect to be pleased?

No. [Google bans](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) asking only the customers you expect to leave good reviews. This is often called review gating. Ask every customer, the same way, whatever you think they will say.

### Why would a burst of real reviews get removed?

A burst of real reviews can be removed because [Google’s policy](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) bans “unusual volumes or patterns” of reviews. A big event, a QR code drive or a one-day email blast can look like that pattern, even when every reviewer is real.

### Can I set review targets for my staff?

No. [The policy](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) bans “Merchants requesting that staff solicit a certain number of reviews.” It also bans asking for reviews that name a staff member. So a contest for the tech with the most named reviews breaks two rules at once.

### Can the words in a review get it removed?

Yes. [Google doesn’t allow](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) “email addresses, phone numbers, social media links, or links to other websites” in reviews. Rants about politics or society are out too, and so is the same text posted more than once.

### Can Google remove a review months after it was posted?

Yes. In April 2025, Google [wrote on its blog](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/maps/google-business-profiles-ai-fake-reviews/) that it now rechecks reviews more often, even months after they were posted. So an old review that looked fine at first can still be taken down.

## Is Google Deleting Reviews Right Now?

Yes. As of October 2026, Google’s own [yearly reports](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/maps/new-ways-were-protecting-businesses-on-maps/) show it blocked or removed more than 292 million policy-violating reviews in 2025. That is up from 240 million in 2024 and 170 million in 2023.

**170 million+** policy-violating reviews that Google blocked or removed in 2023.

[Source: Google, 2026](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/maps/new-ways-were-protecting-businesses-on-maps/)

On top of normal removals, there have been waves that hit many businesses at once. Two had public answers from Google.

**February 2025: a count bug.** Many owners saw their review counts fall. A Google staff member posted in the [Google Business Profile Help Community](https://support.google.com/business/thread/324226897/gbp-review-count-known-issue-update?hl=en) that it was “a display issue. The reviews themselves have not actually been removed.” A later update said “No reviews were unpublished due to this issue.”

**July 2026: missing reviews and paused reviews.** [Search Engine Roundtable reported](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-business-profile-reviews-vanish-41620.html) on July 3, 2026 that local reviews were going missing for many businesses. One owner said a count of about 4,651 reviews dropped to 63. A Google spokesperson said Google would “restore any reviews that were incorrectly removed” once it looked into the issue. Search Engine Roundtable later added that Google said the issue “has been resolved and all missing reviews should now be visible.”

Part of this is a newer Google defense. In April 2026, Google [said](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/maps/new-ways-were-protecting-businesses-on-maps/) it now acts fast on a sudden spike in spam reviews. It removes the fakes, pauses new reviews, alerts the owner and shows a banner to customers. One owner in [Google’s help forum](https://support.google.com/business/thread/446543274/i-lost-over-1200-reviews-overnight-0-reviews-0-rating-please-help-case-id-6-9264000041426?hl=en) said Google removed a wave of fake one-star reviews and blocked new ones. The next day, all of their real reviews disappeared.

## Can a Profile Change Make My Reviews Disappear?

Yes. A move, a merge, a new name or a suspension can all hide or remove reviews. Here is what Google says about each one, as of October 2026.

**You moved.** If you move and keep the same name, Google moves your reviews for you, per its [page on moving reviews](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3098204?hl=en). For some categories, like hotels, reviews may not move automatically.

**You changed your name.** The same page warns that a name change that doesn’t meet Google’s rules means “it’s considered a new business.” Your old reviews may not follow you.

**You made a new profile.** Don’t. Google says not to create a new profile when you move or change owners. If you already did, contact Google to move your reviews to the right one.

**Two profiles were merged.** Google’s [duplicate profile page](https://support.google.com/business/answer/12756178?hl=en) says that when two profiles merge, the reviews are combined, but replies to reviews may be lost. Its [missing reviews page](https://support.google.com/business/answer/10313341?hl=en) adds that it “might take a few days” for all the reviews to show.

**Your profile was suspended and then reinstated.** Google’s [missing reviews page](https://support.google.com/business/answer/10313341?hl=en) says: “Sometimes reviews might be removed after a Business Profile is reinstated. If this happens, contact support for assistance.” Google makes no promise that they return.

**Google restricted your profile.** If Google decides an owner broke its Fake Engagement policy, it can act on the whole profile. It [may block new reviews](https://support.google.com/business/answer/14114287?hl=en), hide old ones for a set time, or show a warning to customers. Google says it will “notify business owners via email” first, and you can appeal.

Before you change your name, address or category, read our guide to [optimizing your Google Business Profile](https://kihanmarketing.com/how-to-optimize-google-business-profile/). After a move, update your other listings too, so they match. Our guide to [local citations](https://kihanmarketing.com/local-citations/) shows how.

## Why Are My Google Reviews Not Showing Up?

Google reviews usually don’t show up because Google is still checking them, which can take a few days. Less often, reviews are turned off for that type of business, or the Google Business Profile isn’t verified yet. A review that never showed up is not the same as one that went away. Here are the common reasons a new review doesn’t show, per Google’s [missing reviews page](https://support.google.com/business/answer/10313341?hl=en).

- **It is still being checked.** Google says this “might take a few days, which can delay a review’s appearance on your profile.”
- **The customer’s app is old.** Google says people on older phones or software “might have trouble” leaving reviews and should update the Google Maps app.
- **Reviews are off for your type of business.** Google says it may turn off reviews for a while for some profiles or types of business. It also offers reviews only in some countries and for some business types, per its [review page](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3474050?hl=en).
- **Your profile isn’t verified.** Google’s [appeals page](https://support.google.com/business/answer/13597551?hl=en) notes that content for an unverified profile “might not appear across Google.”

## What Can You Do When Google Reviews Go Missing?

As of October 2026, you can check for notices, gather proof and contact Google Business Profile support, but you can’t restore a review yourself. Work through these steps in order.

1. **Check your email and your profile.** Look for a message from Google about a restriction or a review pause. Google [emails owners](https://support.google.com/business/answer/14114287?hl=en) before it restricts a profile.
2. **Rule out a display issue.** If the count fell but the reviews are still listed, wait a few days. Check the [Google Business Profile Help Community](https://support.google.com/business/thread/324226897/gbp-review-count-known-issue-update?hl=en) for a known issue post from Google staff.
3. **Check the Reviews Management Tool.** [The tool](https://support.google.com/business/answer/4596773?hl=en) shows the status of reviews you reported. Its one-time appeal covers only reviews you flagged that Google kept up, not real reviews Google removed.
4. **Contact support.** For real reviews that were removed, Google’s [only advice](https://support.google.com/business/answer/4596773?hl=en) is to “contact support for assistance.” Give reviewer names, dates and screenshots.
5. **Tell the customer they can appeal.** A reviewer can [appeal a removal](https://support.google.com/maps/answer/16673099?hl=en) from their own Google Maps profile. Ask once, politely, with no reward attached.
6. **Appeal a restriction the right way.** Send one appeal and wait. As of October 2026, Google [says](https://support.google.com/business/answer/13597551?hl=en) reviews of appeals “can take up to 5 business days.” Don’t send repeats, and don’t make a new profile.
7. **Accept a rule-based removal.** Google is [clear](https://support.google.com/business/answer/10313341?hl=en): “Reviews removed for policy violations won’t be restored.” Put your time into new reviews instead.

Two more points. A suspended profile must be reinstated before you can appeal anything else, per Google’s [appeals page](https://support.google.com/business/answer/13597551?hl=en). And Google’s [reporting page](https://support.google.com/business/answer/4596773?hl=en) says not to report a review just because you dislike it.

**Evidence to keep before you contact support:**

- A screenshot of each review: the reviewer’s name, the stars, the text and the date.
- Your review count and star rating, with the date you noted them.
- The date you first noticed reviews were missing.
- Any email or warning from Google about your profile.
- Changes you made recently: name, address, category, hours or new managers.
- How and when you asked for reviews, such as an event or an email send.
- Your case ID once you contact support.

## Why Did My Google Review Disappear? (For Customers)

If you wrote a review and it vanished, Google most likely removed it for breaking a rule. As of October 2026, you can check and appeal from your Google Maps profile.

Google’s [appeals page for Maps users](https://support.google.com/maps/answer/16673099?hl=en) explains how. In your Google Maps profile, you can see whether your content “has been removed or rejected due to a policy violation.” Key points:

- “Content removals can only be appealed once” ([Google](https://support.google.com/maps/answer/16673099?hl=en)).
- “If we find the content was removed in error, we restore the content” ([Google](https://support.google.com/maps/answer/16673099?hl=en)).
- Editing or deleting the review after you appeal cancels the appeal.
- If Google limits an account, other reviews from that account may come down too.

If you edit a review, its date changes to the date of the edit, per Google’s [review page](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3474050?hl=en). You can also delete your own review from Google Maps at any time, using [Google’s edit or delete steps](https://support.google.com/maps/answer/6230175?hl=en).

## How Do I Stop Google Reviews From Disappearing?

To stop Google reviews from disappearing, ask every customer at a steady pace and offer nothing in return. Keep staff and family out of your reviews. [Google’s policy](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) lets you ask customers to share real experiences. You just can’t offer incentives or try to shape what they say. Here is what that looks like day to day.

- **Ask every customer.** Not only the ones you think are happy.
- **Keep a steady pace.** Ask after each job or visit, not in one big push after an event.
- **Offer nothing in return.** No discounts, no gifts, no prize draws.
- **No staff quotas.** Don’t count reviews per person or ask customers to name staff.
- **Don’t pressure people on site.** [Google says](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) businesses “should not require or pressure users to leave ratings or write reviews while on the premises.” Hand over the link and let them review later.
- **Use Google’s own link.** Google lets you [create a link or QR code to request reviews](https://support.google.com/business/answer/16816815?hl=en) to put in receipts or thank-you emails.
- **Keep a record.** Screenshot new reviews each month, so you have proof if they vanish.

For a full system, see our guide on [how to get more Google reviews](https://kihanmarketing.com/how-to-get-more-google-reviews/).

**Quick check: is your profile at risk of losing reviews?**

1. Have you ever offered a discount, gift or entry into a draw for a review?
2. Do staff, family or former employees leave reviews for your business?
3. Do you ask only the customers you think are happy?
4. Do your reviews come in big bursts after events or email blasts?
5. Do staff have review targets, or do you ask customers to name a staff member?
6. Have you changed your name or address, or made a second profile, in the past year?

0 to 1 yesLow risk. Keep asking every customer at a steady pace and save screenshots.2 to 3 yesSome risk. Fix those habits now, before a sweep catches them.4 to 6 yesHigh risk. Stop the practices today and expect some reviews to be filtered.

## What This Looks Like in Your Industry

The same rules play out a bit differently in each trade. Here are common ways real businesses trip them.

**Property management.** A resident appreciation day or a busy move-in week can bring a wave of reviews in one weekend. That can match Google’s “unusual volumes or patterns” [rule](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en). Asking leasing staff to collect a set number of reviews is a staff quota. Ask each resident after a move-in or a repair, spread over time.

**Real estate.** Agents on the same team sometimes review each other’s profiles. [Google’s policy](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) counts employment and other professional ties as a conflict of interest, so those reviews can be removed. Only clients who bought, sold or rented with the agent should review.

**Roofing.** After a big storm, a roofer may finish many jobs in a few weeks. A rush of reviews then is real, but it can still look like a burst. Ask after each job rather than in one batch. If you change your address or open a second office, follow [Google’s rules on moves](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3098204?hl=en) so your reviews follow you.

**Med spas.** “Leave a review, get a discount on your next visit” is an [incentive under Google’s policy](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en). Google removes reviews tied to it, even where the [FTC rule](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/consumer-reviews-testimonials-rule-questions-answers) would allow it. Ask without any offer.

**Dental and law practices.** A practice may move offices, change its name or merge a duplicate profile. Its reviews can then shift ([Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3098204?hl=en)) or take a few days to show ([Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/10313341?hl=en)). Plan the change with Google’s rules in mind, then check every profile after.

**Home services.** Asking customers to “mention your tech by name” so staff hit a target breaks [Google’s rule](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) on reviews that identify a staff member. Track service quality another way.

## FAQ: Google Reviews Disappeared

Why do my Google reviews keep disappearing?Often it means something in how you get reviews matches a pattern [Google’s policy](https://support.google.com/contributionpolicy/answer/7400114?hl=en) bans, such as bursts, staff reviews or rewards. Fix the pattern, ask at a steady pace and ask Google Business Profile support to look at real reviews that were removed. Why is my Google review count going down?Either reviews are being removed, or the count is wrong. If the reviews are still listed, it may be a display issue like the one [Google confirmed in February 2025](https://support.google.com/business/thread/324226897/gbp-review-count-known-issue-update?hl=en). If reviews are gone from the list, they were most likely filtered. Is it a Google bug, or were my reviews really deleted?Compare the count with the list. If the reviews still show and only the number fell, it is likely a bug. If the reviews themselves are gone, Google most likely removed them. Check the [Google Business Profile Help Community](https://support.google.com/business/thread/324226897/gbp-review-count-known-issue-update?hl=en) for a post from Google staff. Do Google reviews disappear and come back?Yes, sometimes. Reviews hidden by a display bug or still loading after a merge usually return. In February 2025, [Google said](https://support.google.com/business/thread/324226897/gbp-review-count-known-issue-update?hl=en) affected profiles “should recover to pre-issue levels over the next few days.” If a review pause hid real reviews, contact support. Reviews removed for breaking the rules do not return. Do Google reviews disappear over time? No, age alone doesn’t remove a review. But [Google can recheck reviews](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/maps/google-business-profiles-ai-fake-reviews/) “even months after they were originally posted.” An old review can be removed if it now matches a spam pattern. Why did my reviews disappear after reinstatement or verification?[Google says](https://support.google.com/business/answer/10313341?hl=en) reviews can be removed after a profile is reinstated, and tells owners to contact support. Content on a profile that isn’t verified may not show across Google until you verify ([Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/13597551?hl=en)). How do I get deleted Google reviews back?Contact support with the reviewer names, dates and screenshots. The reviewer can also [appeal once](https://support.google.com/maps/answer/16673099?hl=en) from their Google Maps profile. Reviews removed for breaking the rules won’t come back. Does Google tell you when it removes a review? Not always. Google says it will “notify business owners via email” before it [restricts a profile](https://support.google.com/business/answer/14114287?hl=en). It also [says it alerts owners](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/maps/new-ways-were-protecting-businesses-on-maps/) when it pauses reviews after a spam spike. For a single removed review, Google’s help pages promise no notice to the owner. Reviewers can see the status of their own content in their [Google Maps profile](https://support.google.com/maps/answer/16673099?hl=en). Why can I see my Google review but no one else can?Google’s help pages don’t say why a review would show only to its writer. One likely reason is that Google removed or rejected it. As of October 2026, the reviewer can check this in their Google Maps profile. It shows whether the content “has been removed or rejected due to a policy violation” ([Google](https://support.google.com/maps/answer/16673099?hl=en)). For most violations, the reviewer can appeal once from there. Can a business remove Google reviews? No. A business can report a review that breaks Google’s policy, and Google decides whether to remove it. [Disliking a review](https://support.google.com/business/answer/4596773?hl=en) is not a reason. Our guide on [getting more Google reviews](https://kihanmarketing.com/how-to-get-more-google-reviews/) covers what to do about a bad one.
