Why Did My Roofing Website Traffic Drop?

Rain falling on a dark tiled roof at sunset as a storm passes over a hillside home

When a roofing website's traffic drops suddenly, first confirm the drop is real, then check whether it repeats each year, then find which pages and searches fell. Google's guide to traffic drops names the usual causes: updates to its systems, technical problems, security or spam issues, seasonality and site moves. Work through them before you change anything on the site.

Key takeaway

Don't rewrite pages or rebuild the site until you know what fell. Check your tracking, compare 16 months in Search Console, and split the drop by page and by search. Then count calls and quote requests, because those are what you actually need back.

Is the Drop Real?

A drop can be a reporting problem and not a loss of visitors, so check that first.

  • Compare your reports. If Google Analytics fell and Search Console clicks held, look for a broken tracking tag or a recent site change.
  • Check Google's data anomalies page. The Search Console data anomalies page records events that can change a chart without any change in your visibility.
  • Compare calls and quote requests. Look at the same weeks in each period. If they held, you may have lost low-value visits, not jobs.

Is It the Season or the Weather?

Roofing demand rises and falls with seasons and storms, so a quiet stretch can look like a loss. In Search Console's Performance report, choose the last 16 months and compare the last three months with the same months a year earlier. If the same dip appeared last year, you are probably looking at the season.

Which Pages and Searches Fell?

Next, compare the last three months with the previous period, then open the tabs for queries, pages, countries, devices and search appearance. The pattern points you to the cause.

Did a Google Update Cause It?

Check your drop's start date against the Google Search Status Dashboard. It lists the August 2026 spam update, starting August 18 and lasting about three days, and the September 2026 spam update, starting September 24 and lasting about 14 days. It also lists the May 2026 core update, starting May 21 and lasting about 12 days. A matching date is a clue, not proof, and Google says a drop after an update may not mean your content is fundamentally wrong.

If you built many town pages from one template, also read Google's spam policies on doorway pages and scaled content. A town page should say something true about that town, such as its housing, its storms and the jobs you have finished there.

Check Your Google Business Profile Separately

Many local calls start on a Google Business Profile, not a website, and your profile has its own numbers. Its Performance report shows calls, website clicks, direction requests and the searches that found you. Check whether the profile was suspended or changed, whether reviews stopped coming in, and whether a rival has appeared in the map results.

In practice

Write down the date the drop began and every change made to the site around that date. It often saves more time than any tool, because a new theme, a plugin update or a changed title is easy to forget.

What to Do Once You Know the Cause

Fix the one thing the evidence points to, then give it time. Google says some changes might take effect in a few hours and others could take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before you assess the effect. Avoid buying links or publishing pages in bulk to recover quickly, since both can break Google's spam policies. If you need calls while you wait, paid ads can cover the gap.

Roofing Website Traffic Drop FAQ

Why did my roofing contractor website traffic drop suddenly?

The usual causes are broken tracking, the season, a technical or indexing problem, a Google update, a spam or security issue, or a site move. Find out which one by comparing 16 months in Search Console, then splitting the drop by page and by search. Then check whether your calls and quote requests fell too.

Does a traffic drop mean Google penalized my roofing website?

Not necessarily. A penalty, which Google calls a manual action, shows in Search Console's Manual actions report. A clean report means no Google reviewer has acted against your site. Rankings can still fall after an update, which is a different thing.

Are AI Overviews taking my roofing traffic?

They may affect some searches, but Google's guide to traffic drops doesn't name them, and we found no reliable figure for roofing. Look at your own data instead. If impressions held and clicks fell on searches phrased as questions, review what now appears on those results pages.

How long does it take to recover from a traffic drop?

Nobody can give you a date, because it depends on the cause. A broken tracking tag can be fixed the same day, while Google says some changes could take several months to show. Judge the fix after a few weeks, and keep counting calls and quote requests.
