A local SEO agency for map pack and location pages

The Map Pack and Your Profile Local SEO and Google Business Profile optimization

Local SEO and Google Business Profile optimization are how a business shows up when people nearby search for what it sells. Kihan Marketing is a local SEO agency for businesses that serve a set area, from a single storefront to many locations. Your website and your Google Business Profile get ranked by two different systems, and we work on both.

  • A site and a Google Business Profile are ranked by two different systems, and usually only one is being worked on.
  • Profile work is category, services, description, photos, questions and reviews, every week rather than once.
  • Surrounding towns are won with location pages that are genuinely about the place, never a template with the city swapped.

A business can sit on page one for its main service and still be missing from the map pack. That's the set of three map results above the regular links. It isn't a broken SEO campaign. It's two ranking systems giving two different answers, and usually only one of them is being worked on. This page covers what the map pack responds to. It also covers what multi-location work turns into past a handful of cities.

Google Maps SEO: the map pack is a separate ranking system

Organic results rank pages. The map pack ranks business entities.

  • A page ranks on its content, its links and its technical health

That's the organic system. Most SEO work is aimed at it.

  • A profile ranks on relevance, distance and prominence

Prominence means how well known the business is. Google's guide to local ranking says prominence also counts links and reviews. That is how many sites link to the business, and how many reviews it has. Distance is the odd one out, because organic search has nothing like it. Two matching businesses with matching websites will still rank apart in the map pack. The only reason is where the person searching happens to be standing.

  • Different inputs, different work

A better blog post won't lift a profile with the wrong primary category. Nor will it fix a missing service list, or a review count well below the competitors above it.

Say you're told your rankings improved, but your phone didn't ring more. Ask which of the two systems improved. Search Console reports the site. Google Business Profile performance reports the profile. Read them separately.

Google Business Profile optimization: what we work on inside the profile

Profile work is not exciting. It's where most of the movement comes from.

  • Primary category

The main category you choose for the business. It has the most direct effect on relevance, and it's the one most often set wrong at signup. A cryotherapy studio filed under "wellness center" competes in a different pool than one filed under "cryotherapy service".

  • Services and products

Each entry is one more thing Google can match to a search. Most profiles have none.

  • Business description, hours, attributes, service area

A business that travels to customers and a storefront need different setups. Get this wrong and the profile gets held back in ways you can't see from the outside.

  • Photos and posts

    Ongoing, not a one-time upload.

  • Q&A

Questions the owner posts and answers, because otherwise a competitor or a confused customer answers for you.

  • Reviews

How many, how recent, the rating, and whether the owner replies. Review work is a process you run every week, not a campaign you finish.

We manage the Google Business Profile and the Yelp business page directly. Around the profile, we also rebuild sites, build booking pages on Amelia and run Google Ads and Meta ads. We build hyper-local location pages, and we make sites easy for AI tools to cite.

Location pages are not profile work, and you need both

A profile can rank in the map pack for the city it sits in. It struggles in the nearby towns where you have no address. Those searches are won with pages. And pages only work if they're truly about the place.

  • Driftwood Builders Roofing, Manchaca and greater Austin

It started with one location. The work grew town by town around Austin, then to the wider metro alongside a full website build. The Driftwood site went from roughly 50 pages to more than 250. More than 40 of them now cover towns and neighborhoods in Central Texas.

  • The decision that mattered: no templates

The towns around Austin differ a lot in housing, storm exposure and permit rules. So we wrote each page about what's actually true of that town. A page that swaps the city name into the same paragraph is what Google's spam policies call doorway abuse. Their examples include pages aimed at different cities that all send people to one page.

  • Project pages and a video library

More than 30 project pages show completed work. A YouTube Knowledge Center inside the website looks like YouTube and holds more than 200 videos. Those videos also become roofing posts.

Over 90 days, against the same period a year earlier, average Google position moved from 48 to 20. The site held 3,147 keywords in Google's top 10, and organic clicks were up 25 percent.

What multi-location work actually requires

The word "multi-location" hides most of the work. Going from one profile to twenty five isn't twenty five times the same task.

  • A profile per real location, and only real ones

Google removes profiles at addresses that don't meet its guidelines. Google's guidelines for representing your business say a virtual office can't have a profile. That means a mailing address the business rents but doesn't work from. And a removal takes the rankings with it.

  • NAP consistency and LocalBusiness schema, per location

NAP means name, address and phone. One location with a different phone format in three places is a slow leak. The schema carries each location's own address, hours, map coordinates and service area, not one block for the whole site.

  • One indexable page per location that's worth reading on its own

If the page would survive a city name swap unchanged, don't publish it.

  • An internal linking structure that connects them

Location pages that nothing links to don't rank. We built Kihan Internal Linker for this, alongside Kihan Indexer, Kihan Schema and the Kihan SEO plugin.

  • A review process that runs per location

A company-wide review average tells you nothing. One branch with a poor average drags down the whole brand.

  • A decision about what happens when a location closes or moves

Nobody plans this, and sooner or later everyone needs it.

We do this for property management portfolios too. Each community website is a separate property with its own address and its own local search footprint. We revamp community websites alongside a full revamp of the corporate site. We have also turned a 5-page AppFolio site into a 250-plus page site. Every managed property there has its own page, with its live availability listing.

A quiet street of shopfronts at dawn with a cyclist passing and lights coming on

Nobody controls the map pack.

What a single-location business actually needs

A single-location business doesn't need a 250 page site. It needs five things.

  • The profile set up correctly

Category, services, hours, attributes, service area.

  • A review process that runs

    Every week, not once.

  • One strong page for the service and one for the city

    Not twenty thin ones.

  • Correct schema

So the site and the profile describe the same business.

  • Consistent listings

The same name, address and phone everywhere they appear.

That's a smaller job than most agencies would like to sell. It's usually what the situation calls for. You need more when your service area is wider than your storefront. Think of a contractor with one address who serves eight nearby towns. They compete in eight map packs from one point on the map. That's where location pages start earning. It's the problem the roofing site above had before the work went metro-wide.

What can actually be controlled

Nobody controls the map pack.

  • What you can't edit

Distance is a ranking factor you can't change. Review counts move with what customers do. Buying reviews breaks Google's rules. Google's Maps content policy bans reviews that have been paid for, directly or in kind. It puts a profile at risk of suspension, and getting it back is never guaranteed.

  • What is controllable

The right category and a complete profile. How you ask for reviews, and consistent listings. Good location pages, schema, and how the site links together. Those are the things we work on.

Questions businesses ask about local SEO

What is local SEO, and how does it work?

Local SEO is the work that gets a business found by people searching nearby. It runs on two systems. The map pack ranks your Google Business Profile on relevance, distance and prominence. The regular results rank your website's pages on content, links and technical health. Local SEO works on both, because they give different answers.

How long does local SEO take to work?

Local SEO timing depends on where the profile and pages stand now and how strong the nearby competition is. A wrong primary category or a missing service list can be fixed quickly, but Google decides when rankings move. Reviews build week by week. No one can promise a date for the map pack.

How much do local SEO services cost?

The cost of local SEO services depends on how many locations you have and how much each one needs. One storefront needs a correct profile, a review process and a few strong pages. Twenty locations need a profile, a page, schema and reviews for each. Our pricing page explains what moves the scope.

Is local SEO worth it for a small business?

Local SEO for small businesses is worth it when the business serves a set area, because people searching nearby are often ready to call or visit. The map pack sits above the regular links. A business missing from it can rank on page one and still lose the call to a competitor shown above it.

Does local SEO still work?

Local SEO still works, because Google still shows the map pack for searches tied to a place. What has stopped working is shortcuts. Bought reviews break Google's rules and put a profile at risk of suspension. Templated town pages count as doorway pages. A complete profile, real reviews and pages written about each town hold up.
