AI search visibility tools show whether your business comes up in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. You may rank well on Google and still have no idea what ChatGPT tells buyers about you. These tools run your customers’ questions through each AI, log whether you are named or cited, and track it over time.
Sound familiar?
- You rank in Google’s top three, but ChatGPT names different competitors, or nobody at all.
- Your SEO reports look fine, but none of them tell you if your brand shows up inside AI answers.
- You asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the same question, and each one named different brands.
- You found AI visibility tracking in Ahrefs and Semrush, but it sits behind a paid plan.
- Your rankings held, but AI Overviews cited you in far fewer answers, and you only caught it weeks later in a manual check.
Start with a free baseline. Write 10 to 20 questions in your customers’ own words, run them by hand in each AI, and log what you see. Then open the AI reports already in Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and GA4. Pay for a tracker only when the manual log gets too big to keep up.
What Are AI Search Visibility Tools?
AI search visibility is how often AI answers name, cite or recommend your business. AI search visibility tools are trackers that measure it across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI features. They do for ChatGPT and AI Overviews what a rank tracker does for Google’s regular results. The difference is what they record. A rank tracker records one position for a keyword. An AI visibility tool records whether a written answer names or cites you, and that answer can change each time.
The work of showing up in those answers is often called answer engine optimization (AEO). For how that differs from regular SEO, see AEO vs SEO. Most AI visibility tools work the same basic way:
- Pick the prompts. A prompt is a question typed the way a customer would type it. You write your own, or the tool suggests some.
- Run them on a schedule. The tool sends each prompt to each AI engine, often once a day. Profound’s glossary puts it plainly: “Prompts run once a day on each configured platform.”
- Store the answers. The full text of each answer is saved, so you can read it later.
- Check each answer. The tool checks whether your brand is named, where it sits, which pages are cited and how the answer talks about you.
- Show the trend. The results roll up into scores and charts you can compare week to week.
Vendors collect answers in different ways. Some send prompts through the AI company’s API, a direct connection built for software rather than people. Others load the real chat or search page in a browser, the way a person would. An answer pulled through an API may not match what a signed-in customer sees. Even a free grader can mix sources. HubSpot’s AEO page says its grader’s ChatGPT and Gemini results come from training data, while Perplexity uses live search.
Prompts also come from two places. Custom prompts are the ones you choose. Vendor prompts come from the tool’s own database. As of October 2026, Ahrefs says its AI Visibility Index uses “492 million+” prompts (Brand Radar). A big database is good for spotting topics. Your own prompts tell you more about the questions that bring you customers.
What Is the Difference Between a Mention and a Citation?
A mention is your brand name in the AI answer text, and a citation is a link to your page as a source. Ahrefs Brand Radar defines mentions as “how often your brand name appears in AI answer text” (Brand Radar). Citations are “how often AI links to your pages or domains as a source,” in Ahrefs’ words.
Say ChatGPT names your company but links to a Yelp page as its source. You got the mention, and Yelp got the citation. Both are worth tracking. A mention builds your name. A citation can send a visit.
Why Track AI Visibility If AI Traffic Is Small?
Track AI visibility because many people read the AI answer and never click, so being named matters even when AI sends few visits. The research below shows two things: AI sends little traffic, and AI summaries cut clicks to regular results.
8% of visits with a Google AI summary led to a click on a regular result, versus 15% of visits without one.
1% of visits to pages with an AI summary ended in a click on a link inside that summary.
0.25% of a site’s total traffic came from AI tools, on average, across 81,947 sites.
Pew based its figures on the March 2025 browsing of 900 US adults. The Ahrefs figure is a mid-2025 benchmark, and the same study found ChatGPT was “sending >80% of AI traffic.” The lesson is the same in both studies. If your name is in the answer, readers hear about you even when they never click.
Which Metrics Do AI Visibility Tools Track?
AI visibility tools track how often you are mentioned, how that compares with competitors, and which pages the AI cites. Position and sentiment add detail. Tools name them a little differently.
- Mention rate (visibility score). The share of answers that name you. Scrunch calls it Brand Presence: “the percentage of AI responses whose text mentions your brand by name.” Profound’s Visibility Score sounds similar, but it is a different number. It leaves out answers that name no brand at all.
- Share of voice. Your slice of all the brand mentions in a set of answers. Ahrefs defines AI Share of Voice as “the percentage of AI responses within your topic set that mention or cite your brand versus competitors” (Brand Radar). Profound’s version is shorter: “How often your brand is mentioned compared with all brands” (glossary).
- Citations and cited URLs. The pages the AI links to as sources. Semrush says its Sources report shows “every domain and URL that AI platforms cite when answering your tracked prompts” (Prompt Tracking guide). This is the metric you can act on. It tells you which pages, yours or other sites, shape the answer.
- Average position. Where you appear in the answer when you appear at all. Profound defines it as “The average position of your brand relative to competitors across responses.” Scrunch uses Top, Middle or Bottom instead of a number.
- Sentiment. Whether the answer speaks well of you. Similarweb shows whether AI answers describe your brand “positively, negatively, or neutrally” (AI Brand Visibility). HubSpot AEO scores it on “a scale from -100 to +100” (HubSpot AEO).
- Competitor gap. The prompts where a rival shows up and you don’t. Semrush’s Brand Performance reports offer “a direct, side-by-side comparison of your brand against a specific competitor” (Brand Performance guide). Peec AI lists a “Gap analysis” feature on its pricing page.
For a small business, three numbers are enough to start. Track your mention rate, your share of voice against two or three local rivals, and the pages that get cited. You can work out the first one yourself:
Mention rate calculator
- Answers that named your business
- Answers you checked
Mention rate is the answers that named you, divided by all the answers you checked, times 100.
Why Do AI Answers Change Every Time You Ask?
AI answers change because ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI features write each reply fresh instead of pulling up a stored result. The same question can get a different list of brands each time, so one screenshot proves very little.
A study by SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai tested this. The team ran 12 brand-recommendation prompts across ChatGPT, Claude and Google Search AI Overviews, 2,961 runs in all, Search Engine Journal reports. “Each prompt was run 60-100 times per platform,” the article says. It quotes SparkToro co-founder Rand Fishkin. “If you ask an AI tool for brand/product recommendations a hundred times nearly every response will be unique,” he said.
Keep two caveats in mind. Search Engine Journal notes that “The report is not peer-reviewed academic research.” Gumshoe also sells AI tracking tools, so it has a stake in the topic. Even so, the main lesson is useful. How often a brand shows up across many runs is a steadier number than where it ranks in any single answer.
Ranking well on Google does not settle it either. “38% of pages cited in AI Overviews also rank in the top 10,” an Ahrefs study from March 2026 found. Ahrefs says that is down from about 76% in July 2025. So most pages cited in AI Overviews do not rank in Google’s top 10 for that search. You have to check the AI answer itself.
Here is what that means for tracking:
- Track many prompts. One prompt is a coin toss. A set of 10 to 20 starts to show a pattern.
- Repeat the runs. Run the same prompts again on a schedule, and run the key ones two or three times in one sitting.
- Keep your setup the same. Use the same wording, the same city and a private window every time. Then the changes you see come from the AI, not from your setup.
- Read trends, not screenshots. Judge by the mention rate over weeks. Don’t panic over one bad answer, and don’t celebrate one good one.
How to Track AI Search Visibility for Free
You can track AI search visibility for free with a list of prompts, a private browser window and a spreadsheet.
- Write 10 to 20 prompts in your customers’ words. Mix three kinds: problem prompts (“why is my AC blowing warm air”), shopping prompts (“best roofer in [your city]”) and brand prompts (“is [your business] any good”). Use the words customers say when they call, not your service names.
- Run each prompt in each engine. Use ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google Search, where AI Overviews and AI Mode appear. Sign out, or use a private window, so your history doesn’t shape the answer.
- Stay in one place. Run every check from the same city, since local answers depend on location.
- Log what you see. Note whether you are named, where you appear, which pages are cited and which competitors are named.
- Repeat every month. Use the same prompts, engines and location, so the months compare. Add prompts as you add services or cities.
After each round, work out your mention rate per engine with the calculator above. Then list the sites that get cited most. Those are the pages AI leans on in your field. If you are still sorting out the terms, here is how AEO and GEO differ; both are names for getting your business into AI answers.
What Should a Tracking Sheet Include?
A plain spreadsheet with one row per prompt, per engine, per run is enough. The rows below are made-up examples.
| Date | Prompt | Engine | Named? | Position | Cited pages | Competitors named | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 1 | best roofer in [your city] | ChatGPT | Yes | 3 of 5 | Yelp, BBB, your site | Rival A, Rival B | Mentions your warranty |
| Oct 1 | best roofer in [your city] | Google AI Mode | No | None | Angi, a local news list | Rival A, Rival C | Not on the cited list |
| Oct 1 | is [your business] any good | Perplexity | Yes | 1 | Google reviews, your site | None | Old phone number shown |
After a month or two, the sheet shows where you are missing and which sites the AI trusts. That is your to-do list.
Which Free AI Search Visibility Checkers Can You Use?
As of October 2026, Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking and HubSpot all offer free AI visibility checkers. They give a quick snapshot without the manual work. Most use the vendor’s prompts, not yours, so treat them as a second opinion. These five are free to try:
- Ahrefs Free AI Visibility Checker. Ahrefs calls it “a one-time snapshot,” with no signup. It covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews, and shows the top cited domains and pages.
- Semrush AI Search Visibility Checker. You “can use the tool three times per day for free, without registering or creating an account,” Semrush says. It covers ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews, with a competitor comparison.
- SE Ranking’s free checker. The SE Ranking AI visibility tracker page says: “You get 5 free checks per day.” It covers Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini.
- HubSpot AI Search Grader. It is “a free, one-time check that reveals what ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini say about you based on their training data,” HubSpot says. You fill in a short form to see the full results.
- Am I on AI? The Am I on AI? homepage offers a free AI visibility audit with “No credit card required.” The tool’s paid plans track ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews.
What Do Search Console, Bing and GA4 Show About AI Search?
Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics 4 (GA4) all show some AI search data, for free, as of October 2026. Together they show how often AI features surface your pages and how many people click through. None of them shows the answers inside the ChatGPT or Gemini apps. For those, you still need your own prompt list.
Does Google Search Console Show AI Overviews Data?
Yes. As of October 2026, Google Search Console reports AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions in its generative AI performance report. Google launched Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console on June 3, 2026. The reports cover AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover. Google rolled the reports out to a subset of sites first. Google’s post says that as of August 31, 2026, every website has them.
The main metric in the Search Console generative AI report is impressions. Google defines it as “How often URLs from your site appeared in generative AI features in Search and Discover” (launch post). You can break it down by page, country, device and date. The Search Console help page describes impressions only, not clicks.
Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode still sit inside your normal totals. Google says AI feature traffic is “reported on in the Performance report, within the ‘Web’ search type” (AI features page).
Does Bing Webmaster Tools Show AI Citations?
Yes. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report that counts how often AI answers cite your site. A Microsoft Advertising blog post from March 2026 lists what it shows:
- “Total citations show how often your content is referenced by AI systems”
- “Grounding queries reveal the key phrases AI used to retrieve content that was cited”
- “Page-level citation activity shows which specific URLs are cited most often”
Microsoft announced the public preview on February 10, 2026, on the Bing Webmaster Blog. The report covers “Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations,” Microsoft’s post says. PPC Land notes that citations “operate independently from click-through rates, impressions, or average positions,” and the metrics Microsoft lists are all citation counts, not clicks.
Can GA4 Show Traffic From ChatGPT?
Yes. GA4 added an AI Assistant channel for traffic from AI chat tools such as ChatGPT. Google’s What’s new page dates the change to May 13, 2026. Google’s channel help page gives the definition. “AI Assistant is the channel by which users arrive at your site from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, or Grok.”
The GA4 AI Assistant channel has one catch. Google’s channel help page says “It excludes Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode.” Visits from those land in Organic Search with the rest of your Google traffic. The page doesn’t list every AI assistant it counts, and Perplexity isn’t named in its examples.
To see it, open the Traffic acquisition report and look for the AI Assistant row. For more detail, switch the dimension to Session source / medium. If you want your own rules, GA4 says “you can create your own custom channel groups” (help page).
Some AI visits may still hide. “ChatGPT appears to have stopped adding utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it shows and stopped passing a referrer,” says a report from October 2026. Those two signals are how GA4 knows a visit came from ChatGPT. The report’s figures come from one practitioner’s analysis. “OpenAI has not confirmed it,” the report adds. If the report holds, some ChatGPT visits could show up as Direct in GA4.
AI Search Visibility Tools Compared
As of October 2026, AI search visibility tools come in four kinds. There are free quick checkers, AI add-ons inside SEO and marketing suites, dedicated AI trackers, and the free reports in Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and GA4. The table compares 14 tools on the engines they track, custom prompts, cited URLs, free options and entry price. Every row comes from the vendor’s own pricing page, product page or help docs. Prices are list prices shown to a US visitor. The order is not a ranking. Prices and engine lists change often, so check the vendor’s page before you buy.

These 14 tools, plus the free reports covered above, fall into four groups. Pick the group first, then the tool.
Free checkers
Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking, HubSpot and others offer free quick checks. Most run the vendor’s prompts, not yours.
- Best for a first look, or for checking how a rival shows up.
SEO and marketing suite add-ons
Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Moz Pro, Similarweb, HubSpot and Ubersuggest sell AI tracking inside or next to their main plans. Some plans already include a small prompt quota.
- Best for teams that already pay for one of these suites.
Dedicated trackers
Profound, Peec AI, OtterlyAI, Scrunch, Rankscale, Writesonic and Am I on AI? do AI tracking as their main job. Most run daily and add engines on higher plans.
- Best for daily runs across several engines, once a spreadsheet can’t keep up.
Reports you already own
The Search Console generative AI report, the Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report and the GA4 AI Assistant channel cost nothing. They show impressions, citations and visits, but not ChatGPT or Gemini answers.
- Best for every site owner, from day one.
A few vendor details change the math, as of October 2026:
- Refresh speed differs. Semrush lists “Prompt tracking: updated daily” and “Brand Performance reports: updated weekly” in its knowledge base. Moz lists “Weekly Prompt Tracking.” Ubersuggest updates monthly, biweekly or weekly, depending on the plan (pricing).
- Some quotas are already paid for. Paid Ahrefs plans include custom prompts: “Lite 5, Standard 10, Advanced 20” (Brand Radar).
- Trials may lock your prompts. Profound’s pricing FAQ says trial users “cannot customize their prompts.” Enterprise users “can edit, disable, or add prompts.”
- Credits change the cost. Rankscale runs on credits. Each engine query “uses a fraction of a credit (typically 0.25),” says its pricing page. You choose how often prompts run, from hourly to monthly.
- Engines can be add-ons. OtterlyAI tracks four engines on every plan and sells Claude, Google AI Mode and Gemini as extras (pricing).
How to Choose an AI Visibility Tool
Choose an AI visibility tool by the engines your customers use and the prompts you care about, not by the length of its feature list. No one tool is right for every business. Before you buy, tick off this list:
- The plan you would buy covers your engines. For most local businesses, that means Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT first.
- You can enter your own prompts, in your customers’ words, for your city.
- It shows cited URLs, not just a score. Cited pages tell you what to fix.
- It runs each prompt daily, or several times per check, to smooth out the noise.
- You can add two or three local rivals and see them in the same answers.
- You can export your data to a spreadsheet.
- The cost per prompt makes sense. Divide the price by the number of prompts the plan covers.
Do I Need One If I Already Use Semrush or Ahrefs?
Maybe not, so check your plan first. As of October 2026, Ahrefs includes a few custom prompts in its paid plans (Brand Radar). Semrush’s SEO-only plan shows its AI features as not included, while its Semrush One plans include prompt tracking. If your plan covers your 10 to 20 prompts in the engines you care about, start there.
API vs Scraping: Which Is More Accurate?
No one has settled this, and vendors make different claims. Scraping the real chat page is closer to what a customer sees, and an API answer can differ, as explained above. The fair test is simple. Run 10 of your prompts by hand, then compare your results with the tool’s results for the same week. If they rarely match, ask the vendor why.
Quick check: do you need a paid tracker yet?
- Does your monthly manual check take longer than you can spare?
- Do you need to track more than one city or location?
- Do you want answers checked daily instead of monthly?
- Do you need to watch more than three competitors?
- Do you have to show AI visibility trends to a boss, partner or client?
- 0 to 1 yes
- Stay with the free method. A spreadsheet and the reports you already own will do.
- 2 to 3 yes
- Try a free checker or a trial, or the AI features in an SEO suite you already pay for.
- 4 to 5 yes
- A paid tracker is worth pricing out. Use the checklist above to compare two or three.
What Prompts Should Each Industry Track?
Each industry should track the questions its customers ask before they call. For local businesses, start with Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT. Swap in your own city and services.
| Industry | Example prompts | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Property management | “property management companies in [your city]”; “how much does a property manager charge in [your city]”; “is [your company] a good property manager”; “apartments for rent in [your neighborhood] that allow dogs” | Which review sites and directories get cited; whether owner reviews come up; whether your community or only listing sites appear for renter prompts |
| Real estate | “best real estate agent in [your neighborhood]”; “should I sell my house now or wait in [your city]”; “agents who sell condos in [your city]” | Whether your name or only the big listing sites appear |
| Roofing | “roofers near me with good reviews”; “do I need a new roof or a repair”; “roof replacement companies in [your city]” | Whether answers cite your reviews, your site or lead sites |
| Med spa | “best med spa in [your city] for Botox”; “who does lip filler near me”; “is [your med spa] safe” | Sentiment, and which treatment pages get cited |
| Dental | “emergency dentist open Saturday in [your city]”; “dentist that takes [your insurance] near me”; “Invisalign cost in [your city]” | Whether hours and insurance details are right |
| Law | “car accident lawyer in [your city]”; “do I need a lawyer for a DUI in [your state]”; “is [your firm] good” | Which legal directories get cited; how your firm is described |
| HVAC, plumbing, electrical | “AC repair near me open now”; “why is my water heater leaking”; “electrician for panel upgrade in [your city]” | Whether you appear for urgent “near me” prompts and problem prompts |
Mix three kinds of prompts in each set. Shopping prompts show who gets recommended. Problem prompts show whose advice gets cited. Brand prompts show what the AI says about you, including mistakes like an old address or phone number.
Why take this from us
Kiran Dasgupta, Founder and Lead Strategist at Kihan Marketing, wrote this guide. He sets up analytics for clients and works on how they show up in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search and Perplexity. Kihan Marketing measures answer engine work on a fixed set of buyer questions, checked in ChatGPT and Gemini on a schedule. We track our own agency the same way, as the page linked below explains.
What to Do First
Do three things in order: build a baseline by hand, open the free reports you already have, and pay for a tracker only when you need one. Tracking only tells you where you stand. To improve, read our guide on how to get cited by AI.
- Build a baseline by hand this week. Run your 10 to 20 prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, and log the answers in a sheet.
- Open the reports you already have. Check the Search Console generative AI report, the Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report and the GA4 AI Assistant channel. Also check that robots.txt, the file that tells crawlers what they may read, lets in OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot (crawler setup guide).
- Pay for a tracker only when you need one. When the sheet gets too big to keep up, take the quick check and checklist and compare two or three tools.
AI Visibility Tools FAQ
What are the best AI visibility tools?
No one AI visibility tool fits every business. The right one tracks the engines your customers use and takes your own prompts. It also shows which pages get cited, at a fair cost per prompt. The comparison table puts 14 options side by side, as of October 2026.
Are there free AI visibility tools?
Yes, but most free options are quick checkers, not trackers. Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking and HubSpot all offer free checks. As of October 2026, HubSpot AEO also has a 28-day free trial with 25 prompts. For ongoing tracking at no cost, use the manual method and the reports in Search Console, Bing and GA4.
How much do AI visibility tools cost?
As of October 2026, entry prices in our table run from $17 a month for Rankscale Essentials (billed yearly only) to $250 a month for Scrunch Core. Profound is custom priced. The lowest price in our table that you can pay monthly is $29 a month for OtterlyAI Lite, as of October 2026. Many tools also have a free trial or a free checker.
Are AI visibility tools accurate?
They are accurate about the answers they collected, but those answers vary from run to run. Treat any score as an estimate. Scores from different tools are not comparable, because each uses its own prompts, engines and formula. Google’s own guide is blunt about outside tools. “No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems,” says Google’s guide to generative AI features. Trust the trend over weeks, and spot-check a few prompts by hand.
How many prompts should I track, and how often?
Start with 10 to 20 prompts and check them once a month. Cover problem, shopping and brand questions. Your list can grow as you add services or cities. Paid tools often run prompts daily, which helps smooth out the swings between answers.
How do I track my brand in ChatGPT answers?
Run your prompts in ChatGPT, signed out or in a private window, and log whether your brand is named and which pages ChatGPT cites. Repeat the same prompts monthly, or use a tool from the table for daily runs. The GA4 AI Assistant channel shows the ChatGPT visits it can identify, though some may now show up as Direct.
What does share of voice mean in AI search?
Share of voice in AI search is your brand’s share of all the brand mentions in a set of AI answers, compared with competitors. If you are named in 3 answers and a rival is named in 9, you hold 25% of the mentions between you. Ahrefs Brand Radar and Profound each report a version of it, with slightly different formulas.
Can anyone promise you AI search visibility?
No. AI answers change from run to run, and no outside party controls them. “Be wary of third-party tools that promise ranking success,” Google warns in its guide to generative AI features. Judge any tool or provider by what it measures, not by what it promises.
Is a paid tracker worth it for a small local business?
Often not at first. A short prompt list, a monthly check and the free reports cover most small businesses. A paid tracker starts to make sense when you track several cities, many rivals or daily changes. The quick check in the how to choose section helps you decide.
What is prompt volume in AI visibility tools?
Prompt volume is an estimate of how often people ask AI assistants a given question, much like search volume for a keyword. Profound defines it as “The projected demand for a prompt or topic” in its glossary. Profound says it models the figure from real prompts that opted-in panel users sent to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity (Prompt Volumes FAQ). It is a vendor estimate, not a figure OpenAI or Google publishes, so use it to decide which questions to track first.
