Local SEO Pricing: What Local SEO Costs and What You Should Get

A local bakery storefront at sunrise, with a blank chalkboard sign on the sidewalk by the open door and shelves of bread inside, the kind of nearby business that local SEO helps customers find

Local SEO pricing is easiest to judge per location, per month. Providers averaged $1,557 a month for local SEO in Ahrefs’ poll of 439 SEO providers, as of August 2024. For that, you should get named work on your Google Business Profile, reviews, listings, location pages and call tracking. If a quote can’t name those tasks, ask before you pay.

Sound familiar?

  • You asked what the monthly fee gets you, and the answer was “local pack visibility” and “authority building.”
  • You run a trade, and you don’t have 12 months to find out if this works.
  • You only want to show up when someone in your city searches “plumber near me,” but every quote is priced like a national campaign.
  • Your profile is set up and active, but the phone barely rings and no real leads come through.
  • You get some reviews and you post on your profile, but calls still aren’t what they used to be.
Key takeaway

Judge a local SEO price per location, not per invoice. A fair package names the monthly work for each Google Business Profile. It asks for reviews without incentives, keeps listings accurate and in your name, and shows calls you can check. Google says, as of October 2026, that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. Its local help adds that no one can pay for a better local ranking.

How Much Does Local SEO Cost Per Month?

Local SEO from a provider averages $1,557 a month, based on Ahrefs’ poll of 439 SEO providers, as of August 2024. Ahrefs asked providers what they charge, not owners what they pay.

In the same Ahrefs poll, agencies charged $1,819 a month for local SEO on average, as of August 2024. Freelancers in the Ahrefs poll charged around $1,150 a month, as of August 2024. Hourly work is common too. In the Ahrefs poll, the most common hourly rate for local SEO providers was $75 to $100 an hour, as of August 2024.

Many providers serve local clients at lower price points. In SE Ranking’s survey of 260 agencies, 94% of agencies focus on small or local businesses. In the same SE Ranking survey, 30% of agencies charge less than $500 a month, as of December 2024. Those are general SEO retainers, not local-only prices, so treat them as a low end to compare against, not a target.

Whitespark lists its SEO services at plans ranging from $499 to $1,999 a month, as of October 2026.

45% of US consumers use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6%, per BrightLocal’s 2026 survey.

That finding matters more than any single price. In BrightLocal’s survey, most local SEO agencies bill for set tasks each month, and those tasks are what you are buying.

What Do Local SEO Packages Include?

A real local SEO package covers six jobs for each location: the profile, reviews, listings, location pages, local schema and tracking. The fee should map to work on each one. Check each quote against this list.

  • Google Business Profile management. Someone keeps your Google Business Profile complete and correct: categories, hours, services, photos, posts and replies to reviews. Google says creating a Business Profile is free, so you pay only for the work.
  • A review program. You get a simple way to ask every customer for a review, plus replies to the reviews that come in. It must offer no rewards and must not filter out unhappy customers first.
  • Citations and listings. Your name, address and phone match across Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp and the listing sites in your trade. These listings are also called local citations, and keeping them the same is called NAP consistency.
  • Location pages. Each office, store or service town gets its own page with real local detail, not one template with the city name swapped.
  • Local schema. Your pages carry schema markup that states your business name, address and hours. Google’s LocalBusiness guide lists address and name as the required properties, as of October 2026.
  • Tracking and reporting. You see calls, direction requests, form leads and map rankings for each location, in accounts you can open yourself.

Our guide on how to optimize your Google Business Profile covers the profile tasks step by step. If you want the bigger picture first, read how local SEO works.

The review line deserves a closer look. As of October 2026, Google’s Maps content policy bans offering “payment, discounts, free goods and/or services” in exchange for reviews. The same policy bans efforts to “selectively solicit positive reviews from customers,” which is what review gating does. The FTC’s final rule on reviews, effective October 21, 2024, also bans buying positive or negative reviews. A good review program asks everyone and rewards no one. It also can’t promise rankings. Google’s local ranking help only says that more reviews and positive ratings can help.

How Does Local SEO Pricing Scale by Number of Locations?

Local SEO pricing scales with the number of locations, because each one has its own profile, reviews, listings and page. The table shows published list prices for local SEO software, the part of the cost you can see.

Tool and plan1 location2 to 5 locations6 to 10 locationsSource and date
BrightLocal Track (rank and listing checks)$41 a month$62 a month$83 a monthBrightLocal pricing, billed monthly, as of October 2026

Semrush Local Pro$60 a month per locationSemrush Local plans, as of October 2026
Whitespark Reputation Builder$79 a month per locationWhitespark pricing, as of October 2026

No survey we found breaks agency fees down by location count, so the table stops at software. For agency work, the price per location moves with scope. Run any quote through the calculator below and compare the result with the local averages in the Ahrefs poll above. These are the drivers to ask about:

  • Profiles. Each verified profile needs its own posts, photos, review replies and fixes.
  • Pages. Each location needs a page with real local detail.
  • Listings. Each address needs its own listings checked and cleaned. Old addresses and duplicates add work.
  • Competition. A location in a crowded big city can need more review and page work than one in a small town.
  • Shared work. Strategy, reporting setup and site fixes are often done once and shared. That is why a second location can cost less than the first.

Moz Local follows the same model. Moz says each physical location you manage in Moz Local needs its own subscription, as of October 2026.

Monthly cost per location calculator

  • Total monthly fee you were quoted
  • Number of locations it covers

It divides the monthly fee by the number of locations, which gives what you pay for each location each month.

Once you have the result, ask what each location gets for its share. A low cost per location with no named tasks is not a better deal.

How Is Local SEO Different From a General SEO Retainer?

Local SEO is built around places, while a general SEO retainer is built around a website. A local package is sized by profiles, reviews and service areas. A general retainer is sized by pages, content and links for one site.

Local work also tends to cost less. In Ahrefs’ poll, local providers charged $1,557.08 a month on average, as of August 2024. That is less than half what providers serving a wider market charged.

The ranking rules differ too. Google’s local ranking help says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence, which means how well known a business is. No agency can change distance, so good local work focuses on the other two.

What Does Local SEO Cost If You Do It Yourself?

Doing local SEO yourself costs some software and your own time. The profile is free, and many core listings can be claimed at no cost. The money goes to tools that save time on tracking, listings and reviews.

A single-location owner could build a simple kit from published plans:

You don’t need all of these. Start with one tracker, then claim the core listings by hand. Our free and paid tool picks compare more options, and the guide to citations lists which directories matter in each trade.

The real DIY cost is time: review replies, photos, posts, listing fixes and location pages. Price your own hours before you decide it is free.

What Do Affordable Local SEO Packages Leave Out?

Affordable local SEO packages often leave out the work that takes people time: location pages, review replies and listing cleanup. Software can check listings and track rankings cheaply. Writing and fixing still take hours.

Watch for these red flags in any package:

A ranking promise

Google Search Central says, as of October 2026, that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Its local help adds that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

  • Walk away from a guaranteed map spot

Keywords stuffed in your name

Google’s rules say adding extra words to your business name could get your profile suspended, as of October 2026. Experts in Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey rank keywords in the business title third among map factors. So some agencies may still suggest it.

  • Your profile name should match your real name

Review packages

Paid or rewarded reviews break Google’s Maps content policy and are removed from Google Maps. Gating, where only happy customers get the review link, breaks it too.

  • Ask how review requests are sent, word for word

Fake or virtual offices

Google’s rules say, as of October 2026, that a service-area business can’t list a virtual office unless it is staffed during business hours. P.O. boxes are not allowed as addresses.

  • One real address, with a service area if you travel

The agency owns your profile

If the agency is the owner of your Google Business Profile or listings, leaving gets messy. You should be the owner, and the agency a manager.

  • Check owner and manager roles today

No access to tracking

A report you can’t check is just a claim. You should be able to open the rank tracker, analytics and call tracking yourself.

  • Ask for logins, not only screenshots

What Should You Ask Before You Sign a Local SEO Package?

Ask who owns the accounts, what each location gets each month, and what happens to your listings if you stop. Use this checklist on every quote.

  • Who is the owner of each Google Business Profile, and will it stay in my name?
  • What exact tasks does each location get each month, and how many of each?
  • How do you ask for reviews, and can I see the message customers get?
  • Can I log in to the rank tracking, analytics and call tracking myself?
  • Which listings will you build or fix, and in whose account?
  • What happens to my listings and their data if I stop paying for the service or a tool?
  • What does the agreement cover, and how does either side end it?
  • Who does the work each month, and who do I talk to?

Whitespark says listings made by automated platforms such as Yext are tied to that system and your continued payment, as of September 2026. Ask whether the listings stay as they are if you stop paying. Whitespark sells a one-time Yext Replacement Service at $399 per location, as of October 2026, for businesses leaving Yext. Moving off a listings tool can be a job of its own.

Quick check: Is your local SEO package doing real work?

  1. Do you get a list of the tasks done for each location last month?
  2. Are you the owner of every Google Business Profile?
  3. Do new reviews get a reply within a few days?
  4. Does each location have its own page with real local detail?
  5. Can you see calls and direction requests for each location yourself?
0 to 1 yes
You may be paying for activity you can’t see. Ask for the task list and your owner access first.
2 to 3 yes
Some of the work is real. Fill the gaps in reviews, pages or tracking before you spend more.
4 to 5 yes
The package is doing real work. Judge it next on calls and leads over the coming months.

What Does Local SEO Scope Look Like by Industry?

The same local SEO package fits each trade differently, so scope changes the cost more than the trade name does. These are scope examples, not price quotes.

Plumbers and home services

Many plumbers, HVAC and electrical firms travel to the customer. As of October 2026, Google’s rules say a service-area business should have one profile with a set service area and a hidden address. The work is one strong profile, a page for each main town you serve, and a steady flow of reviews. More towns mean more pages, not more profiles.

Roofing

Many roofing buyers look for proof of past work before they call. A roofing package should cover project photos on the profile, town pages and fast review replies. In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey, 74% of consumers seek reviews written in the last three months. So ask for a review after each job, not in one burst a year.

Property management

A property manager may have an office profile plus a profile for each apartment community. Each community needs its own reviews, photos and page. Here the location count drives cost almost directly, so the per-location math above matters most.

Real estate

A real estate brokerage often has one staffed office and sells across many towns and neighborhoods. Google’s rules say, as of October 2026, that a virtual office, a rented address the business doesn’t operate from, isn’t eligible for a profile. So the work is one or a few office profiles and a page for each area the team sells in. Steady new reviews matter too.

Med spas

Many med spas are one location with many services. The work leans on a complete service list, photos, reviews on Google and Yelp, and pages for each treatment. In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey, 68% of consumers will only use a business with four or more stars. Review replies need care. They should never confirm what treatment a client had.

Dental practices and law firms

Dental practices and law firms often have several offices or several practice areas. Each office needs its own profile and page, and each service or practice area needs clear pages too. Reviews matter, but replies must stay general and never confirm who is a patient or client.

Why take this from us

Kiran Dasgupta wrote this guide. He founded Kihan Marketing and leads every engagement himself, including the local SEO and Google Business Profile work. He has done this work for clients in property management, real estate, roofing and med spa. One example is an Austin roofing company. It began as single-location SEO and grew town by town. The site grew from roughly 50 pages to more than 250. It now has pages for more than 40 towns and neighborhoods in Central Texas.

What Is Worth Paying For in Local SEO?

Pay for the work you can’t or won’t do well yourself, and keep the free parts free. For most owners, that means paying for steady profile work, location pages and a review system. It rarely means paying for hundreds of listing sites.

AI search is a new reason to care about listings and reviews, as the BrightLocal 45% figure above shows. Whitespark’s survey adds that 3 of the top 5 factors for showing up in AI search are about listings, also called citations. Clean, matching listings help in both places.

How Long Does Local SEO Take to Work?

There is no fixed timeline for local SEO, and no honest provider can promise one. Agencies such as WolfPack Advising estimate that clear gains show within six to twelve months, as of October 2023. SeoProfy says a plan usually takes 6 to 12 months to earn a positive return, as of May 2026. Those are agency estimates, not Google figures.

Some fixes, like correct hours or a better category, go live as soon as Google accepts them. How Google ranks you after that depends on your market and your rivals.

Ask a provider what you should see first and what comes later. Expect profile fixes and listing cleanup early, while reviews and pages build over time. Judge the work on the direction of calls, leads and map visibility over several months, not on one week.

Local SEOGoogle Business Profile, reviews, listings and location pages, kept in your name.

What to Do First

  1. Check your ownership. Open your Google Business Profile and confirm you are the owner, not only a manager.
  2. Count your locations. List every office, community or service town, so each quote prices the same scope.
  3. Ask for the task list. Send each provider the checklist above and compare their local SEO pricing packages by the monthly work per location, not the total fee.

Local SEO Pricing FAQ

Is local SEO worth the money?

Local SEO is worth paying for when the work is named and you can check the calls it brings. In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults, 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses. Ask whether a package keeps that review and profile work going each month. A fee with no task list is hard to judge at any price.

Why do some agencies charge more for local SEO?

A higher local SEO price should mean more scope, so ask what it covers. Look for more locations, more location pages, more listings to clean up or tougher local competition. Who does the work changes the price too. In Ahrefs’ poll, agencies charged $1,819 a month for local SEO on average and freelancers around $1,150 a month, as of August 2024.

How much do local SEO packages cost for a small business?

In SE Ranking’s survey, where 94% of agencies serve small or local businesses, 30% charge less than $500 a month, as of December 2024. That is general SEO, not local SEO alone. Backlinko’s survey found plans under $500 a month are common for small local businesses in emerging markets, as of December 2025. Only 7% of providers in the US, UK and Australia offer them, per Backlinko.

How much does Google Business Profile management cost?

No survey we found prices Google Business Profile management on its own. Ask whether a quote lists it as its own task inside the monthly fee. The Google Business Profile itself is free, Google says. Semrush Local Base, which adds an AI profile helper and a map rank tracker, is $30 monthly per location, as of October 2026. Pay for help if no one on your team will keep the profile current. That means photos, posts, review replies and fixes.

Is local SEO a one-time or ongoing cost?

Mostly ongoing. BrightLocal notes that some tasks, like an audit or a citation campaign, are one-off. Most of the work that keeps a business visible is ongoing.

Should I pay for regular SEO if I already pay for local SEO?

Only if you also want to rank for searches with no local intent, such as how-to questions across the country. If your customers search near you, a local package covers most of what you need.

Can a local SEO company buy reviews for me?

It should never do so. Google removes paid or rewarded reviews, and the FTC’s 2024 rule bans buying positive or negative consumer reviews.
