Why Is My Business Not Showing on Google Maps? 10 Causes and How to Fix Each

Aerial view of a city at dusk, its lit streets laid out like a map, for a guide to fixing a business not showing on Google Maps

Why is my business not showing on Google Maps? In most cases, it is one of two things. Either the Google Business Profile is not live yet, because it is unverified, pending, suspended, a duplicate or not eligible. Or it is live but loses on relevance, distance or popularity for that search.

You search for your own business and a competitor down the road shows up instead. This guide helps you find out which case you are in. Then it walks through each fix, using Google's own rules.

Sound familiar?

  • Google verified us, but the profile still says it is "being connected" to Search and Maps, and now we are not visible at all.
  • Our new profile does not show up for our own business name, or for anything else.
  • We only appear if someone types our full name plus the city.
  • We go to our customers, and on the map we do not get "even a small red dot."
  • We passed video verification twice, and the profile still is not verified.
Key takeaway

Run three checks before you change anything. Search your exact name on Google Maps, look at the profile's status, and search your address. If the profile is not live, fix verification, suspension or duplicates first. If it is live, the problem is ranking, and Google says you cannot pay to fix that.

Is Your Business Missing From Google Maps, or Just Not Ranking?

If Google Maps finds your business when you search its exact name, it is on Maps but not ranking. If it does not, the Google Business Profile itself has a problem. The fixes are different, so find out which one you have first. Three quick tests tell them apart.

  1. Search your exact business name on Google Maps. Use a private browser window, so you see what customers see. Google's Find your business page suggests searching your business name and city. If it shows up, it is live, and the issue is ranking. If it does not, go to test 2.
  2. Check the status in your Business Profile. Sign in to the Google Account that manages it. Google says you must sign in to that account to find your profile. Look for a "Get verified" button, a suspension notice, edits marked Pending or Not approved, or a closed label. Each one points to a cause in the table below.
  3. Search the street address. Type the address into Google Maps and look at the pin. Is the pin in the wrong place, or does another business show at your address? Then you may have an address or duplicate problem. A service-area business with its address hidden gets no pin at all. That is normal.

Here is what the results mean. Found by name, but not for "roofer near me"? The profile is live, so skip to the ranking section. Not found by name, but the profile looks fine inside? Check for a duplicate, an address problem or edits still in review. Not found, and the profile shows a warning? Fix that warning first. Nothing else matters until it is cleared. Did it show before and vanish? Think about what changed lately. A new name, address or category can start a new verification. A report to Google can change the profile or mark it closed.

Why Is My Business Not Showing on Google Maps? 10 Causes and Fixes

Ten causes cover most cases. Your Google Business Profile may be unverified, suspended, ineligible or duplicated. It may be waiting on edits, wrongly placed, hidden as a service area or marked closed. Or it is live but not ranking, or simply too new. Each row shows how to tell, what to do and how long Google says the fix can take. The rules come from Google Business Profile Help, as of October 2026.

Why Is My Google Business Profile Not Showing Up After Verification?

If your business is verified but not on Google Maps, it is most often still in review. It may also be only partly verified, or waiting on edits. Verification is the first gate. Google says "Only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search."

Is verification still pending?

Google reviews every verification before the profile goes live. Per Google, verification reviews take up to 5 business days, and rarely longer. A video recording is reviewed on the same timeline.

Sometimes the "Get verified" button comes back after you thought you were done. That means Google could not completely verify your business. The fix is to verify again.

Which verification method should you use?

You do not get to choose. The options include phone or text, email, a live video call, mail and a video recording. Google states that verification methods "are automatically determined by Google and can't be changed."

If Google offers video, it recommends that you use it. A few rules catch people out:

  • Under Google's video rules, the video must be live, unedited and at least 30 seconds long.
  • If customers visit you, your business name should be on a permanent sign, wall or window, and match the name on the profile. A service-area business shows its tools or equipment instead. It can also show a document, such as a permit, invoice or utility bill, that matches the profile name.
  • Phone menus block phone codes. Google says IVR systems won't get the code.

Mail is the slow route. Most postcards arrive within 14 days, and the codes expire after 30 days. Do not edit your name, address or category while you wait. If you do, the code Google sent will not work.

Are your edits still under review?

Every edit to a verified profile is checked before it goes live. An edit marked Pending is still in review. One marked Not approved was turned down. Google may do that when it cannot confirm the change is accurate. Google says edits "usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but sometimes it can take up to 30 days."

Some edits also start a new verification. If you change your name after verification, you might need to verify again. If you move to a new address, you must. Adding or editing a category can do the same.

Our advice: make all your changes in one go, then leave them alone while Google checks them. If something goes wrong, you will know which change caused it.

Has Your Profile Been Suspended or Disabled?

A suspended or disabled Google Business Profile will not show on Google Maps until the issue is fixed. You will get a notice in the Google Account that manages it. Google says a profile that breaks its guidelines "won't show to other users on Google until you resolve the issue."

The way back is an appeal through Google's own appeal process, not a post in the community forum. Here is what Google says about it, as of October 2026:

Two common triggers are an address Google does not accept and a business name stuffed with extra words. Google says unneeded information in the name "could result in the suspension of your Business Profile."

To learn what gets a profile suspended, see our guide on how to optimize your Google Business Profile.

Is a Duplicate Listing or Address Problem Hiding Your Business?

It can be. Google allows one Business Profile per business. If a second profile exists, Google may show that one instead of yours. A profile treated as a duplicate "won't show on Google Search or Maps."

How do you fix a duplicate?

Do not make a new profile for each service you offer. Google's guidelines say there should only be one profile per business, and a practitioner shouldn't have several profiles to cover their specializations.

Is the address one Google can find?

Google needs an address it can find on the map. If Google cannot find yours, select Adjust and set the pin yourself. Write the address the normal way. Google says to avoid addresses like "Corner of Main St. and Broadway Ave."

A move is a special case. Most businesses update the address on the same profile and then verify again. Restaurants, hotels and venues work another way. Google says location edits will be rejected for businesses tied to their place, like dining or lodging. They must mark the old profile permanently closed and create a new one at the new address.

Is the address one Google accepts?

Some addresses are not allowed at all. As of October 2026, Google's rules say:

Why Is My Service Area Business Not Showing on Google Maps?

A service-area business with its address hidden will not show as a pin on Google Maps. That is by design, not a fault. Google says that if you hide your address, your profile "will only show your service area."

Google defines a service-area business as one that visits or delivers to customers. It does not serve them at its own address. If you work from home, Google tells you to hide your business address. A hybrid business serves customers at its address and also goes out to them, so it can show its address.

Here is how to set up the service area, as of October 2026:

  • You can add up to 20 service areas, by city, postal code or another kind of area.
  • The whole area should not reach more than about 2 hours of driving time from your base.
  • You can no longer set a radius around your business. Use named areas instead.
  • Approved service area edits may take up to 48 hours to show.
  • One profile covers the whole area. Do not make a profile for each town.

So where does a service-area business show up? In local results for people searching in the areas it serves, rather than as a pin at a street address. Never add a fake address to get a pin. Google wants the profile to match the real business. Breaking its rules can get it suspended.

Is Your Business Marked as Closed on Google?

A business marked closed can still appear, but with a "Temporarily closed" or "Permanently closed" label. You may not have set it yourself: if Google gets reports that your info is wrong, it might update your profile. For broad searches, Google notes that temporarily closed businesses "can rank after open businesses."

To reopen, go to Edit profile, then Hours, and choose to open with main hours. If the profile was marked permanently closed because you moved or changed your name, do not reopen it. Add a new business and verify it instead.

Why Does My Business Show Up by Name but Not for My Services?

If your business shows up for its name but not for your services, the profile is live and the problem is ranking. Google says local results are "mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity."

These three factors decide who appears in the local pack, the short list of map results near the top of Google. Google also calls the third one prominence. Here is what each one means and what you can change.

Relevance

What Google says: Relevance is how well a profile matches the search. Google asks for "complete and detailed business info."

  • What you can change: fill in every field, pick the most specific primary category and list the services you really offer.

Distance

What Google says: Distance is how far the business is from the person searching.

  • What you can change: very little. Make sure your address or service area is right.

Popularity

What Google says: Popularity, or prominence, is how well known a business is. It is partly based on links to your business and on reviews. "More reviews and positive ratings can help."

  • What you can change: ask happy customers for reviews, reply to them, and earn mentions on other sites.

Accuracy counts too. Google says that if your info is not accurate, your profile might not show up for relevant searches in your area.

Is your primary category right?

Your categories matter. Google says "The categories you select affect your local ranking on Google."

Pick the most specific one that fits. Google's own example is to choose "Nail salon" instead of "Salon". Use as few categories as possible. Pick ones that finish the sentence "This business IS a", not "This business HAS a". You can add up to 9 more after the primary one.

Why don't I show up for "near me" searches?

Distance changes the results for every searcher. A business across town may not show for someone searching "plumber near me" on the other side of the city. That is distance at work, not a penalty.

Opening hours can matter too. Google's example is a hair salon that may appear for "salons open now" because it has given its address and hours. Keep your hours right so Google can match you to searches like that.

Can you pay to rank higher?

No. Be wary of anyone who promises a top spot on the map for a fee. Google states: "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google."

Reviews feed the popularity factor. To earn more of them, see how to get more Google reviews. For the wider playbook, read our Google Maps SEO tips.

How Long Does It Take for a Business to Appear on Google Maps?

A new business can take up to a month to show up in rankings, according to Google. Smaller steps are faster. Here are the waits Google states, as of October 2026.

What Should You Have Ready Before You Contact Google Support?

Before you contact Google support, have your profile details, screenshots and proof of the business ready. The checklist below lists each one. Reach out once the waits Google states have passed and the fixes above have not worked. Some problems need support from the start. Google says to contact it to fix an incorrect address when you have not moved. The same goes if two different businesses were merged by mistake. Outside the UK and EEA, appeals of rejected profile edits go through Contact us too.

Your support checklist

  • The business name and address exactly as they appear on the profile.
  • The Google Account that manages the profile, signed in.
  • Screenshots of any status message or warning you see.
  • The dates of your last edits, and what you changed.
  • Proof of the business, such as a license, registration, tax certificate or utility bill, with the same name and address.
  • For video verification, be ready to film your permanent sign with the business name. A service-area business films its tools and equipment instead, and can show a business document with the profile name.

What Does This Look Like for Different Kinds of Business?

The rules are the same for every business, but each trade trips on a different one. Home services need a service-area setup, property management and real estate run into eligibility rules, and offices with several practitioners need practitioner profiles.

Roofing and home services

Roofers, plumbers and HVAC companies go to the customer. That makes them service-area businesses. They should hide the address and list the areas they serve. Keep the whole area within about 2 hours of driving from the base. Expect no pin on the map. For more, see our guide to local SEO for contractors.

Property management

A vacant apartment cannot have its own Business Profile. Google lists rental or for-sale properties, such as vacant apartments, as not eligible. A leasing office is different. Google says sales or leasing offices are eligible for verification. The office still has to meet the main rule of in-person contact during its stated hours.

Real estate

Model homes and homes for sale are not eligible either. An agent who works from home and meets clients elsewhere should hide the home address. An agent can also have their own practitioner profile, apart from the brokerage, under the rules in the next section.

Med spa, dental and law offices

Med spas, dental offices and law firms often have several practitioners under one roof. Google allows each one a practitioner profile. They must work in a public-facing role. They must also be reachable at the verified location during stated hours. Use the real name on each profile, with no keywords added. Keep one profile for the business itself, not one per treatment or practice area.

What to Do First

  1. Run the three tests. Search your name in a private window, check the profile status and search your address.
  2. Clear any warning first. Verification, suspension and duplicates come before ranking work.
  3. Then work on ranking. Fix the primary category, complete the profile and keep asking for reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Google Business Profile not showing up in search?

A Google Business Profile that is not showing up in Google Search usually has the same causes as one missing from Maps. It may not be verified, it may be suspended, or it may be a duplicate. The three tests above show which one it is. Is it your website that is missing from search results, not your profile? That is a separate problem with how Google indexes the site.

Why does my business only show up when I search the name plus the city?

Distance can explain it. Google says distance is how far each business is from the customer who is searching. If a customer does not share where they are, Google uses what it knows about their location. So the same name search can give different results for people in different places. Check that your address or service area is correct, then test the name alone from inside the area you serve, not from across town.

Does Google Maps show businesses without a physical address?

Yes. A business that goes to its customers can hide its address. It then shows in local results for the areas it serves, with no pin. See the service area section for the rules.

Does my website affect whether my business shows on Google Maps?

It can help with ranking, in a modest way. Google says prominence is partly based on how many websites link to your business. Google also uses content from a business's official website as one source of profile info. If you list a website, Google says to make sure Googlebot isn't blocked on it.

Can I add my business to Google Maps myself?

Yes. As the owner, you can add or claim your Business Profile at business.google.com/add, at no charge. Then verify it. Anyone can add a missing place to Google Maps, like a coffee shop or a landmark. To manage the listing's details, Google points you to a Business Profile instead.
